Port Perry Minor Hockey VP Operations Attends Concussion Symposium
On November 3, 2011 I attended a concussion symposium hosted by Whitby Minor Hockey Association (WMHA).  The event covered crucial topics through discussion including identifying signs and symptoms of a concussion, treating concussions, and preventing concussions.  Dr. Michael Czarnota, Ph.D., Official Neuropsychology Consultant of the Canadian Hockey League, was the keynote speaker for the event, which also had Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger TSN Hockey Insiders and Dr. Michael Hutchison, Ph.D. researcher & post-doctoral in injury prevention at St. Mikes Hospital speak at the podium.

I want to thank WMHA and its resources for taking a leadership role in advancing the awareness and education surrounding concussion management.

In the case that you suspect your player/child has had a concussion you need to seek medical attention immediately.  Prior to returning from a concussion Port Perry Minor Hockey (PPMH) requires:

  1. A medical note from a doctor clearly indicating he/she can return to play.
  2. An e-mail from the players legal guardian to the team coach and appropriate Convenor: repconvenor@portperryminorhockey.ca or hlconvenor@portperryminorhockey.ca indicating that the player has performed off-ice activities (elevating his/her heart rate) and has had no adverse symptoms.
  3. The first return to play on-ice will be a practice where the legal guardian(s) and team staff will monitor the player.
  4. A consultation between the legal guardian(s) of the player and team staff will occur before a return to game action occurs.
  5. A final e-mail from the players legal guardian(s) acknowledging that the previous four (4) steps have been completed must be sent to the Association attention: vpops@portperryminorhockey.ca

Port Perry Minor Hockey has adopted a Return to Play Policy.  Please see our Policy Section for this document.
